Task 15 Elements Of Game Design, Part 6: Visual Composition

A mastery of composition is essential to round out technical skills due to many talents that are improved with composition.
Speed of which the concept work is produced is increased to a point which the artist can create many images of the same elements in different compositions, this allows for an ideal number of ideas to be thought over, also whether or not some elements would work in a final piece, increasing chance of creating a really nice composition for the final.
Another skill that comes with mastery of composition is perspective within the composition, perspective drawings in the concept sketching can only improve with practice, so, this idea that there are many sketches produced, proves that this is true. The more times that an artist is drawing forms in correct perspective, the more accurate the perspective would be.
The ability to manipulate placement in a composition in order to lead the eye to a focal point in the image, is acquired through this mastery. Composition plays a vital part in the viewer being drawn to the main asset in the pictures, if the composition arranges the objects in the scene so that the placement of one object takes away from the main subject of the piece, then that would diminish the potential that the particular piece could have.
On a similar point, colour use in planning and concepting is key to a successful, good looking final outcome when presenting. This would be used well in game, where levels are vibrant and colourful, colours guiding the player’s eyes around the world, showing the work off and really trying to stir an emotion in the players. That sort of eye for colour and direction comes with composition.
All these skills that mastering composition will bring, can be applied in game levels. The speed of which concept is produced and incorporated into the game shows the vast options of composition that were available. The result is that levels are at there best when the player can interact with the level on another level of consciousness.
Using perspective to show level design in game is very effective, the composition of the whole level. where the character is placed in the shots can give reference to a huge enemy, mountain or cinematic, this can make or break a certain level that might have created a different emotion than when the idea was initially coined, giving a dulled, undesired effect.
In conclusion, I believe that the mastery of composition is essential to rounding out technical skills in artists. The games industry thrives on the enjoyment of the players. When a game moves players and gives them pleasure in playing the game then all the right things have been addressed and included in the game, these skills must have been used in creating the game, proving the statement ‘composition is essential to round out technical skills’ is in fact true. The basis of the artist the industry is looking for is a really good artists, not technicians, this is why i believe that composition is essential.
