These were the initial ideas for my character development, the description of this character was a large barrel chested man, handsome and resembled an american football player.

These are some body form ideas to get a sense of how the character would look and what sort of clothes he would wear.

Just an attempt to render muscular form in perspective.

This is my final outcome for the storyboard development ideas, this includes all the previously pondered ideas.

landscape storyboard ideas

Some sketches of picket fences that i will include in my storyboard landscape scene, based on the fictional novel 'Husband'
Cedar Shingles for the roof of the bungalow that I will be portraying in the final scene.
The front porch of the home described in my chosen novel has trumpet vines on the supports, this was an attempt to learn how to draw the trumpet vines, combining the colours with graphite pencil.
The Californian pepper tree is also said to be in the scene, i chose to do some practices on the tree in water colours and coloured pencils, also shading pencils.
These are a few ideas that i had for the bungalow that will be the center point of the scene.

The final scene that i intend to compose will include the pepper tree next to the driveway of the house, there will be the picket fence surrounding the garden and entrance onto the front porch, where the trumpet vine will be swirled around the support beams. The roof will be cedar wood and clapboard will decorate the walls of the bungalow. the last element will be the garage added onto the side of the house.

Task 16: Elements of game design, part 7: Level design

Level design is classed as a technical job and a visual art job. Its high level of detail and art directory is often overlooked by the player, but in actuality, the technical side of level design is probably the most important and vital section in the development process. The time and planning that is put into mapping out a path for players, choosing obstacles, and in some cases, puzzle solving activities, is just as much as actual game production and asset creation.
Visual, spatial elements, interactivity, dynamic behaviours, navigation and playability are all warranted in this job, these elements of the game level need to come together nicely in order to have a good level experience.
The first thing that must be pointed out about this job is that spatial elements are indeed, needed to enable characters to travel in the space of the level, the skills required to add the spatial elements to the levels is in its self a technical thing to do, although it involves visual skills in other areas of spatial elements.
Interactivity is another none visual side of level design that doesn’t involve visual skills, in this area of level design is very heavily based around the technical abilities of the artists, using the computer software in such advanced ways as to allow characters to bring a sense of involvement and stimulus to the players.
Dynamic behaviours includes both technical and visual skills. The technical skills shine when using the computer to assign the properties to assets such as; gravity, breakable etc... The process of research uses visual skills in observation of real world physics, as its no use being able to apply these properties to the objects if they don’t know how the assests react to certain situations within a real life scenario
Navigation and playability are the two which uses mostly the visual skills of an artist, these parts of level design are perhaps the most important ones in the sense of the visual skills as the environments need interesting objects in the scene to interact with, also, they need a good layout to keep the player occupied and interested throughout the created level. These parts of the level can’t simply just be thought up and thrown in. they require visual research to create each of the interesting sections of the environment, and require multiple test play throughs, with an engine, to gauge: what kind of space is required in order to allow the size of the character to pass through, The height of a character to make sure that a certain jump or dodge can be effective whilst in gameplay, etc...(Mentioned prior) to be able to sort these issues out, a development team needs time before the art direction within a level is even considered in engine.
It can be argued that level design is a high-end functional activity without the inclusion of any 3d art at this stage in production. Texturing, Models of assets, Sounds and cinematic plays are all over shadowed if the base of all these elements is flawed, either in playability or consistency throughout the level. This is why it is extremely important that the initial level creation includes extended research and testing of all these vital sections of pre-art inclusion.
In terms of a final, completed level, the evidence is clear to a player when poor planning and research has occurred in the initial development of level design.

Task 15 Elements Of Game Design, Part 6: Visual Composition

A mastery of composition is essential to round out technical skills due to many talents that are improved with composition.
Speed of which the concept work is produced is increased to a point which the artist can create many images of the same elements in different compositions, this allows for an ideal number of ideas to be thought over, also whether or not some elements would work in a final piece, increasing chance of creating a really nice composition for the final.
Another skill that comes with mastery of composition is perspective within the composition, perspective drawings in the concept sketching can only improve with practice, so, this idea that there are many sketches produced, proves that this is true. The more times that an artist is drawing forms in correct perspective, the more accurate the perspective would be.
The ability to manipulate placement in a composition in order to lead the eye to a focal point in the image, is acquired through this mastery. Composition plays a vital part in the viewer being drawn to the main asset in the pictures, if the composition arranges the objects in the scene so that the placement of one object takes away from the main subject of the piece, then that would diminish the potential that the particular piece could have.
On a similar point, colour use in planning and concepting is key to a successful, good looking final outcome when presenting. This would be used well in game, where levels are vibrant and colourful, colours guiding the player’s eyes around the world, showing the work off and really trying to stir an emotion in the players. That sort of eye for colour and direction comes with composition.
All these skills that mastering composition will bring, can be applied in game levels. The speed of which concept is produced and incorporated into the game shows the vast options of composition that were available. The result is that levels are at there best when the player can interact with the level on another level of consciousness.
Using perspective to show level design in game is very effective, the composition of the whole level. where the character is placed in the shots can give reference to a huge enemy, mountain or cinematic, this can make or break a certain level that might have created a different emotion than when the idea was initially coined, giving a dulled, undesired effect.
In conclusion, I believe that the mastery of composition is essential to rounding out technical skills in artists. The games industry thrives on the enjoyment of the players. When a game moves players and gives them pleasure in playing the game then all the right things have been addressed and included in the game, these skills must have been used in creating the game, proving the statement ‘composition is essential to round out technical skills’ is in fact true. The basis of the artist the industry is looking for is a really good artists, not technicians, this is why i believe that composition is essential.

Today I was working on the new Queen's building project, I gathered images whilst walking around outside and in, and discussed further ideas for our survival horror remodel of the Queens building. Upon returning home, I started to research horror games that already exist, to get a few pointers. Also looking into books that I have read and films for some inspiration, this was a great help. http://www.deankoontz.com/books/ This is one of my favorite authors, Thrillers being my genre of choice.

I took some of the photos of the Queens building and did paint-overs of them, changing the colours and feel of the mood that the picture gives off.
