Throughout this time period there were many advances within the games industry, the main advancements in the processing power of the computers and consoles used to play video games. These advances made it possible for game developers to really show the market what they can do.
The improved graphic capabilities and colour displays were a great addition to gaming at home, and these new found abilities of home games consoles allowed for the creation of genre-defining games, as video arcade games were said to be in their “golden age” this really concreted the arrival of genre classics; adventure, beat ‘em up, fighting, maze, platform, racing, role-playing, survival horror, stealth, simulation... etc.
In the early 80’s was the time of the 8-bit machines, continued in the late 80’s, then throughout the 90’s came; 16-bit and then the 32-bit, allowing video games to be taken to even newer heights. With this came the rise of the third generation consoles such as the NES and Sega’s master system. The controls to these systems were no longer the conventional joy stick and action button, instead they were directional pads or (D-Pad) for short, accompanied by 2 or even 3 action buttons as opposed to the one. Allowing for much more control available to the player.
This was the birth of online gaming, as dial-up bulletin board systems were popular in the 80’s they were used to play games online, however, only a select few consoles allowed for access to online and the first online games were mostly card gambling games and text adventures.
The first handheld game console was released, although just before the 80’s in 1979, this had an initial success and proves to be just as successful today. The initial success of the LCD handheld games was down to the easy switch cartridge format that the games were produced in. There are many other features of these games; the power consumption of the handhelds was less than the VFD or LED due to the new LCD technology and could be made even smaller, to the size of a watch.
These changes in the technology at this point in time has allowed more advanced developments in games, such as improved graphics and ability to give the players more control over the characters in play, with the introduction of more action buttons and the newly introduced D-Pad in the 3rd generation consoles. So in review of these changes, i’d say that the games differ at the end of the 80’s from the start due to the introduction of even more genres that are available to the consumers of the games industries, the increased memory capacity that was brought with the CD allows for a longer gaming experience due to more content being added. But most of all, the biggest change from the early 80’s to the 90’s, in my opinion, is the involvement of the player in the game they are playing, and this increase in the involvement of the player has derived from the developers being able to increase all aspects of the games they were creating.
Overall, the time lead to a more immersive playing experience, and that is what the early 90’s have gifted games of that time.
